The Bellingham Business Journal is the source of business news in the Bellingham community. Published on the first Monday of each month, we reach decision makers throughout the area. We estimate that our circulation of 5,000 copies reaches five to six readers per issue, bringing our readership up to approximately 30,000 readers per issue. Our Market The Bellingham economy is a diverse mix of light and heavy industry, high-tech business, education, retail, and agriculture. In the past few years, downtown Bellingham has enjoyed a renaissance, with an increase in the number of retailers and major employers calling it home. The home of Western Washington University, Bellingham has a highly educated work force. With a large number of college graduates available, many small to medium-sized businesses have started in the area. Bellingham’s waterfront hosts a major shipping operation and is the southern terminus for the Alaska state ferry system. The current redevelopment effort of the former pulp-mill site on the downtown waterfront has the potential to forever change the face of Bellingham and its relationship with the water. The redevelopment plans are to clean up the site and add residential, commercial, educational and recreational uses to an area that has been used only for heavy industry for the past century. On other areas of the waterfront, recreational boaters enjoy easy access to the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands. Restaurants, parks and trails surround Bellingham Bay, making it one of the state’s best tourist draws. Bellingham’s economic vitality and high quality of life have not escaped national notice. The area was voted the top-rated city in the United States by Outside magazine, was named one of the top places to live and retire by Rand McNally, and was placed in Forbes magazine’s coveted list of top cities in which to start a business. Clearly, Bellingham’s continued ascent has only just begun.
